Discussion on ‘Nepali Media and Gender Issues’ Concludes
Kathmandu. To mark the 114th International Women’s Day, the Federation of Nepalese Journalists’ Central Women’s Committee, in collaboration with the Minimum Wage Determination Committee and the Canada Nepal Journalist Association, organized a discussion on gender issues in Nepali media.
Speaking at the event, Federation President Vipul Pokhrel highlighted the need to integrate social values into the concept of media. He stressed the importance of addressing gender issues in a more nuanced manner to foster balanced societal development.
Sangita Khadka, Chairperson of the Minimum Wage Determination Committee, called for a thorough discussion on the challenges faced by women in the media and urged the formulation of policies and strategies to address these issues. She emphasized the need for women’s leadership and representation in the media industry.
Nirmala Sharma, a consultant for the federation and the chief guest at the event, pointed out that while statistics might suggest inclusivity, the actual access of women journalists to editorial positions remains low. She noted that capacity development, financial instability, and physical insecurity are significant barriers for women journalists in the field.
Veteran journalist Purushottam Dahal expressed pride in the fact that women make up 20 percent of journalists in Nepal. However, he urged this group to work towards achieving 50 percent female participation across all sectors in the country.
